    About Bonsai Pots

Water/Stone Landscape Scene Ceramic Bonsai Pot - 8
A wonderful assortment of unique pots is now available, not only from Japan, but also from Europe and the US. In some Western countries, very high quality pots are appearing, based on both Japanese and local traditional styles. Over the years, some very fine bonsai pots have found their trees, and are raising the standards of Western bonsai to a higher level, even though the creation of bonsai trees as a tradition is still young compared to Asian countries.

The Japanese have developed a great interest in Shohin, resulting in the creation of a broad variety of pots. Pots in all price ranges are available from bonsai stores or the Internet. Japanese bonsai pots in their present form have been produced since the early Showa period (approx. 1920-1935). Tokoname, Yokkaichi, Seto, and Shigaraki are the most famous areas for pot production in Japan. Pots come in all different sizes and shapes. Sizes ranging from less than 5 cm/2 inches to approximately 25 cm/10 inches will work for most Mini, Mame, and Shohin-bonsai.

Today, there are many ancient Bonsai pots worth small fortunes collected throughout Japan. It is safe to say that the pot makes the entire Bonsai experience complete and if the wrong size, shape or color is chosen for the final pot, the entire effort maybe less than satisfactory.

First of all, let's look at the purely practical sides of the pot. The bonsai pot is an essential part of creating the look and size of your tree. A smaller pot allows a smaller root network and a larger one allows a larger root network. Simple as that. This influences how big the tree can get. Of course, the tree variety also plays a very large part in it as well, but you'd be surprised at how important the size of the pot is in creating the size that you desire.

Choosing the right form and color... The color and form of a Bonsai pot are very important. Bonsai containers are both glazed and unglazedpots, and they come in several colors and sizes. The most striking colour of the tree determines the colour of the pot. This can be the colour of the trunk, but also possible flowers. A few tips: Darkgreen and darkblue Bonsai Pots are for Trees with a striking colour like yellow, orangje or red. Conifers and some pine-trees like blue, brown and unglazed Bonsai Pots. The pot should never be too striking so all the viewer's attention goes to the tree itself.

The form of the pot is very important to, but herefore no special rules excist. It's mainly a matter of taste. Make sure the Bonsai pot you choose has at least one drainage hole in the bottom. Composition of your planting must be thought out. It's very important to place the trees in the right composition during the repotting: For square and round pots: In the middle. For oval and rectangular pots the tree should be placed just off center unless it is a formal upright. Then the center would be the best place for it. The shape of your Bonsai pots depends on the Tree and what feeling you are trying to exhibit.
