Caring For Your Bonsai

Once you learn to care for your Bonsai, it will bring you joy for years...
Bonsai care is more than just making sure your tree receives enough water. For Bonsai are unlike other plants where watering every couple of days or a little plant food now and then is all you have to worry about. The joy of purchasing a bonsai tree, is that there is an artistic challenge in properly caring for it.

Because the very essence of a bonsai tree is to keep them a miniature size, the base they dwell in cannot be very large. In fact, part of what causes normal trees to become dwarfed trees is the root confining nature of their containers. Because of this, keeping up with the watering of a bonsai tree can be quite a conundrum.

Bonsai care deals with much trial and error; while some types of trees can handle a somewhat dry period, others must have moist soil all the time. Too little watering can cause the roots to die out whereas too much watering can cause root rot. Learning the water cycle of your particular tree or shrub species in Bonsai form is a must.

Bonsai care also deals with the repotting of the tree. Usually done in the springtime, the tree is uprooted, root-pruned, and repotted. In the developmental years, the repotting process usually occurs every two years. But this time frame shrinks as they become more mature and repotting must take place more often. The process of repotting conditions the tree to soak up moisture more efficiently and the root-pruning promotes active root growth and activity.

Most plants are allowed to grow as they will with an occasional pruning, but as any horticulturist would tell you, the care of Bonsai trees demand more. Part of the artistic beauty that arises from Bonsai is directing the growth of your bonsai tree into a particular shape or form. Bonsai care includes the placement of wires to create the shape that you desire. The process of wiring your tree is subtly simple - first wrapping the tree and then wrapping the wire around the trunk. The wire must be removed before the bonsai tree outgrows, otherwise the tree will begin to grow into the wire, becoming bound to it. When removing the wire, remove it in small pieces or sections so that the least amount of damage is incurred.

Bonsai care is not a dreadful ordeal, quite the contrary; taking some simple efforts into consideration, your skills will be honed and you will groom a healthy bonsai tree. From the watering to the repotting to the shaping of the bonsai tree, the care you take for each task for your tree will determine its lifespan. Treat it with the same respect you would show your other plants and trees and other types of life, and you will have a healthy bonsai tree for years to come to display to friends and family.
