Some Comments on Bonsai Tools and Accesories

Professional Bonsai Tool Set 6 Piece Plus Hemp Brush - (Save $19.95)
The tools used to make possible your crafting of a garden are a mere extension of your creative mind. This couldn't be more visible then in the art of bonsai. Bonsai may indeed be one of the most unique forms of container gardening. Started as an art thousands of years ago in China, bonsai has evolved to a rapidly growing international hobby. The use of bonsai tools, similar to the use of gardening tools in a garden, help shape and train a common tree into a work of art.

Any tree could become a bonsai tree, it's just a matter of controlling its physical properties to resemble a real tree, but keeping it in a small form. Because of the use of bonsai tools, many even consider it a craft. However, the reality is that the end creation is a visible living art - very much like a garden.

Potting tools are needed when potting a bonsai, as well as later on when the bonsai roots are pruned and cut. Wire mesh can be used to stop water and valuable soil such as compost from falling out of the container. A soil scoop and hand spade are needed to place sand over the roots and to dig. Older bonsai trees will require repotting due to a number of reasons such as the outgrowing of a container. Repotting usually takes place every 2 to 3 years.

Bonsai Tree Branch Bonder - Large Size
To bend and shape the bonsai you will need wire and a number of tools. Wire cutters are essential to cut wires that are used to secure the bonsai to the ground and direct roots. Pliers are used to bend thicker wires and maneuver the branches that are secured. Long nosed pliers will be needed to bend wire that is hard to reach, such as in crevices.

Bonsai growers create or shape dead wood on their trees by using techniques such as jin and shari to simulate age and maturity in a bonsai. Jin is the term used when the bark from an entire branch is removed to create the impression of a snag of deadwood. Shari denotes stripping bark from areas of the trunk to simulate natural scarring from a broken limb or lightning strike. In addition to stripping bark, deadwood techniques may also involve the use of tools to scar the deadwood or to raise its grain, and the application of chemicals (usually lime sulfur) to bleach and preserve the exposed deadwood.

A little Bonsai book history, for instructions and the collective wisdom on growing these miniature trees are also valuable tools: In 1829, a significant book was published that first codified classical bonsai art: "Somoku Kinyo Shu (A Colorful Collection of Trees and Plants/Collection of tree leaves)." It includes the basic criteria for the ideal form of the classical pine bonsai, in detail and with illustrations. That same year, small tako-tsuki (octopus-styled) trees with long, wavy-branches began to be offered by a grower in Asakusa Park, a north-eastern Edo suburb. Within 20 years, that neighborhood became crowded with nurseries selling bonsai. The three-volume "Kinsei-Jufu," was possibley the first book to look at the tools need to grow bonsai trees and shrubs bonsai, it dates from 1833.
